Stop snoring and it could prevent heart failure!

Many of us see snoring as nothing more than an annoyance, but leaving it untreated can have severe ramifications on your health. A new study has found that obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) can cause the same early cardiovascular damage as diabetes.
The study - lead by Romanian doctor Raluca Mincu and reported in the Medical Xpress - assessed 20 patients for endothelial and arterial functionality. All of the patients suffered from moderate to serious OSA, but did not have diabetes. They were all of a similar age and had similar cardiovascular risk factors. A control group of 20 people were also tested for the same functionality.
From the study, Dr Mincu found: "Patients with moderate to severe OSA had endothelial dysfunction and higher arterial stiffness than controls, and their results were similar to patients with diabetes mellitus. This suggests that OSA is associated with a high risk for cardiovascular disease."
Accordingly, anyone diagnosed with OSA needs to immediately implement a 'healthy heart lifestyle' to reduce risk. Dr Mincu therefore calls for doctors and practitioners to work harder to diagnose OSA, treating sufferers properly while also testing them for arterial function. She added: "This will help avoid progression of early cardiovascular dysfunction through to heart failure, the final stage of heart disease."
