People who struggle to get a good night's sleep should consider switching to woollen bedding, new research suggests. The study, which was carried out by a research team at the University of Sydney, revealed that wool makes it easier for the body to regulate its temperature, which in turn leads to a better night's sleep. The study involved asking eight volunteers to sleep in three different temperatures using three different bedding materials – wool, cotton and synthetic fabric. The research team found that when the bedroom temperature was warmer, people slept for longer and more deeply when using the woollen bedding. On average, people sweat a litre of water each night. Synthetic materials cannot properly absorb this sweat, and that can easily cause discomfort for the sleeping person. Wool on the other hand absorbs moisture, meaning that people who use wool bedding don't tend to get uncomfortably hot in the night. Chris Tattersall, managing director of The Wool Room, told The Times: "[Wool] is far more flexible at working with the body, and if you have two people in bed it will adapt to suit each person’s temperature. "Partners often sleep at two completely different temperatures – one very hot, one very cold – and can never find the right bedding solution. Wool is the only thing that works."
